Balqees' flagship product is the Hadrami Sidr, the mono-floral honey which comes from the bees that feed exclusively on the nectar of the Sidr tree. This ancient tree grows uncultivated in the remote mountains that climb up from the Wadi Do’an in the Hadramaout region of Yemen, some 1,000 kilometres inland from the coast of the Arabian Sea.
Collected by semi-nomadic beekeepers whose techniques have hardly changed for the last 7,000 years, Sidr honey is famous throughout the Middle East for its distinctive flavour and purity. No chemicals or drugs are allowed in the production process and no machinery is used - just some simple tools and a little smoke from dried camel skins. We only accept honey from suppliers that we can trust to respect these ancient practice and we go one step further by sending a sample of every batch we receive away for testing. Sidr honey is the ultimate organic gift, ideally suited to these environmentally conscious times.
We only supply raw honey, which has not been heat treated or pasteurised. These practices have long been used in industrial honey production to maintain shelf-life and consistency, but it also destroys some or all of the health giving nutrients within the honey itself. None of our farmers or beekeepers feed sugar solution or supplements to their bees either. We are totally dedicated to finding the purest most natural honey there is.
Across the Middle East Sidr Honey is coveted for its rarity value as well as its purity. Sidr bees have a short life span, the Sidr nectar can only be harvested in the spring and autumn and the mountains where the Sidr trees grow are remote and inaccessible. On top of this, the local farmers are fiercely protective of their cottage industry.
Thanks to our local roots, Balqees Honey has established an unparalleled network of suppliers and contacts in the region. With headquarters in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a and a distribution hub in Dubai we alone are able to guarantee regular supplies throughout the Middle East and beyond.
